{"id":220,"date":"2013-12-12T19:57:54","date_gmt":"2013-12-12T19:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alpenalighthouse.org\/michiganlights\/?p=220"},"modified":"2013-12-12T19:57:54","modified_gmt":"2013-12-12T19:57:54","slug":"minising-range-lights-transferred-to-national-park-service-71505","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.alpenalighthouse.org\/michiganlights\/minising-range-lights-transferred-to-national-park-service-71505\/","title":{"rendered":"Minising Range Lights Transferred to National Park Service 7\/15\/05"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has acquired the front and rear range<br \/>\nlights of the Munising U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Station (also referred to<br \/>\nas the Munising Range Lights) through the National Historic Lighthouse<br \/>\nPreservation Act.\u00a0 The primary purpose for acquisition is to continue<br \/>\nmaintenance and upkeep of the building and for office space.<\/p>\n<p>The Station building is being used as office space for park staff, housing<br \/>\nthe Science and Natural Resources.\u00a0 The building will be open to visiting<br \/>\nscientists, researchers and any others doing business with the National<br \/>\nPark Service.\u00a0 The front range light is situated on a .32-acre parcel on<br \/>\nthe shore of Lake Superior in Munising, Michigan.\u00a0 It consists of the 1)<br \/>\nthe front range light, a 58-foot white cylindrical brick and cast iron<br \/>\ntower, constructed in 1908; 2) a 360-square-foot metal-sided garage; 3) a<br \/>\n2,175-square-foot station building constructed out of brick and wood; 4) a<br \/>\n99-square-foot fuel storage building constructed out of brick, and 5) a<br \/>\n70-foot steel VHF tower.\u00a0 The front range light shines 79 feet above the<br \/>\nwater level of Lake Superior.\u00a0 It was built to aid vessels navigating<br \/>\nthrough the narrow passage east and south of Grand Island into the main<br \/>\nharbor, often referred to as Munising Bay.\u00a0\u00a0 It is an active aid to<br \/>\nnavigation, denoted as LLNR 14575.\u00a0 The rear range light is located on<br \/>\nHemlock Street, approximately one-third of a mile southwest of the front<br \/>\nrange light on less than .02 acres and consists of a 33-foot white<br \/>\ncylindrical brick and cast iron tower.\u00a0\u00a0 It is an active aid to navigation,<br \/>\ndenoted as LLNR 14580.\u00a0 Three interpretive wayside exhibits are planned for<br \/>\nthe station grounds to convey the rich history of shipping and aids to<br \/>\nnavigation in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The station ties in with the park mission to &#8220;preserve for the benefit,<br \/>\ninspiration, education, recreational use, and enjoyment of the public, a<br \/>\nsignificant portion of the diminishing shoreline of the United States and<br \/>\nits related geographic and scientific features.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0 Pictured Rocks National<br \/>\nLakeshore interprets the history and stories associated with the U.S.<br \/>\nLighthouse Service, U.S. Life Saving Service, and the U.S. Coast<br \/>\nGuard.\u00a0 Current facilities within the park dedicated to this history are<br \/>\nthe former U.S. Coast Guard lifeboat station at Sand Point in Munising<br \/>\n(1933), the former U.S. Coast Guard lifeboat station and Harbor of Refuge<br \/>\nkeepers quarters at Grand Marais, Michigan (1938 and 1908), and the<br \/>\nlighthouse at Au Sable Point (1874) west of Grand Marais.\u00a0 The Munising<br \/>\nRange Light and Grand Marais Harbor of Refuge Keepers Quarters are of<br \/>\nidentical design, both constructed in 1908.\u00a0 The National Park Service at<br \/>\nPictured Rocks is a logical caretaker for the Munising Range Lights given<br \/>\nthe mission of the park and current park operations.<\/p>\n<p>For additional information, contact Gregg Bruff, Chief of Heritage<br \/>\nEducation, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore at &lt;gregg_bruff@nps.gov&gt;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has acquired the front and rear range lights of the Munising U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Station (also referred to as the Munising Range Lights) through the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act.\u00a0 The primary purpose for acquisition is to continue maintenance and upkeep of the building and for office space.
